Starting a job

Home Job seekers Starting a job

• If you are not clear who to report to (your line manager) ask. Ask for the best way to make contact and how this is best to do so.

• If you know that specific actions/adjustments help, then discuss if this is possible with your line manager/HR. Consider what are your greatest challenges day to day in work and start to prioritise what to focus on. Think of ways to be as organised as possible e.g. regularly using a diary on phone/computer to record all appointments in work and socially (with reminders set).

• Discuss if an Access to Work assessment is possible.

• Ask about the job in as much detail as possible, such as if there are specific work rules you should know about e.g. dress code; addressing peers or managers; customers.

• Ask if there are specific acronyms, or phrases, words used in the work setting you should know.

• Ask about your working hours and the expectations for working after these hours. Is flexi- working a possibility?

• Ask if your line manager can go through your job description so you are sure of what is expected of you and when.
